From the cell webquest and the onion and cheek cell labs you've learned a few fundamental differences between plant and animal cells. Both plant and animal cells have a cell membrane, but only the plant cell also has a cell wall. In the elodea lab you can clearly see the structure and function of each. The process you will see is called plasmolysis - you'll do some further reading on it in the lab. Plasmolysis in action!
- What happens to the cells as the salt water flows under the cover slip?
- Why does this happen?
- Why didn’t the outer boundary of the cell collapse?
- Why do plants wilt when there is not enough water?

Science during Christmas Break!
For the first time in 20 years, my Brother came to visit us in Singapore. It's always been extremely difficult for him to get away for any extended period of time, as he owns an architectural firm in Florida. However, since this is our last year in Singapore he decided to buck up and make the trip. He and his fiancé spent eight glorious days with us exploring Singapore. It was amazing to explore the city with newcomers. Everything that has become normal and commonplace to us was awe inspiring to them-from walks in nature parks to exploring the rich ethnic enclaves. From chili crab, laksa, kaya toast to checking out the buildings throughout the city.
It was a rich experience for us to see the architecture of Singapore through their eyes. Did you know that we have a building in Singapore that was voted the WORLD BUILDING OF THE YEAR in 2015. It's not Marina Bay Sands or the Esplanade! It's an apartment building on Telok Blangah that I never knew existed called "The Interlace". Indeed an engineering and design marvel. Check out the design details here.

The science lab is a unique place to be - A place of exploration and experimentation.
Lab Safety is of the utmost importance as you progress throughout the year in sixth grade science and there are many rules and safety procedures that you need to keep in mind.
Go through our list and pick one.... and Let's MEME it! After you've created your safety meme - embed it onto your blog and take a screen shot of it. Make sure you label the blog post science so I can see it.
In addition, please add it to the class slideshow for sharing.

Family Water Usage
Let's see how much water we use~
Analysis of Data: Analyze your data using the guiding questions below.
Take a screen shot of your water usage graph and put it into a blog post.
Write a paragraph answering these questions using the data from your table and graph. Make sure you answer all of the questions in your paragraph - (don't write the questions, just answer them in a paragraph - you know what I mean)
1. What is your family's average monthly water usage in cubic meters for the past six months?
2. The national average of monthly water use for households in Singapore is 33.4 cubic meters. If you live in a condo the national average is around 15.3 cubic meters
- Is your family above or below the average?
- How much above or below the aerage?
- What percentage above or below the average?
3. What was your family's lowest month of usage? Can you think of any explanation why it might have been lower?
4. What was your family's highest month of usage? Can you think of any explanation why it might have been higher?
How much money could your family save if you cut your usage by 30 percent?
6. There are many easy and inexpensive things you can do to cut your water consumption by 10-40 percent. Come up with a plan and bullet point your ideas (with your family)
Water Cycle, Aquifers, and Singapore's 4 National Taps
Water is a non renewable resource. What does that mean? Think of the water cycle you learned in elementary school. Before we begin today's lesson let's take a look at three things.
1. The water cycle: As a reminder - watch the Tim and Moby clip on water cycle.
2. Where does our drinking water come from? What is the water table and what is an aquifer?Again...watch Tim and Moby, but this time, take the review quiz after you're finished, just to check your understanding. No need to print it off - it's just for your understanding.
3. Singapore is an island of over 5 million people. How does Singapore get it's water? Watch the video below and in your journal explain Singapore's 4 National Taps. Singapore has been studied by countries all over the world for its ingenious water conservation.

Today in class you had the opportunity to see all the 'wretched beasties' in the digital microscopes. Yuk! Here are some of mine -- Imagine drinking THAT?
Please follow the guidelines below and share it on your blog:
Blog Post:
- Embed your videos into your blog (at least 2)
- Include the following information in your post
- Name of microorganism
- Category (protist, multicellular)
- Describe how they move through water
- Describe how they get their food.
- Any other interesting information
NOTE: Make sure you create well written sentences - check grammar and spelling.

LFM (Learning From Mistakes)- Your unit papers are graded and we will be going over them in detail next science block. A number of students have asked me about retakes.
From now on, retaking a summative exam is not possible, however, we encourage you to fill out an LFM on every assessment.
By doing so, it will not increase the grade of the individual assignment, but will be noted (if done correctly) and may be reflected on your final semester grade.
You can find the LFM here.

Reminders:
The final report is due next block. It is all on the rubric which we went over in class,
You can either do this either on paper on via video but either way the required information is the same -
- If you choose to draw diagrams, make sure you take a picture of the diagrams, a picture of your submarine and post it on your blog.
- In your blog post you need to have a full explanation of what is happening with your submarine in all three positions - positive, neutral, and negative. Your diagrams should be neat and clearly labeled. Your explanation should include ballast, density, mass, volume.
- If you choose to do a video, make sure you voiceover with all of the pertinent information. A detailed list of vocabulary to include can be found in the homework calendar.

Big difference between this helping hand video from last year and the one recently posted at the beginning of this year.. It is MUCH TOO LONG but is comprehensive in explaining volume of liquid and solid.
If you finish your lab work, begin making a helping hand video of your own. Perhaps something a fifth grader could understand.
Your video should be no longer than 3 minutes. WHAT???? Yep - no longer than 3 minutes and should include the following:
