Chemical and Physical Change - Smart Start
We have explored chemical and physical properties of matter.
Now let's look at Chemical and Physical Changes in matter.
Watch the clip (click on the picture) about chemical and physical change. Pay special attention to the difference between the two.

Follow that with the States of Matter Clip -
We'll be exploring change of state as a physical change today.
After you hear Tim and Moby explain the states of matter - Click HERE to play a bit with changing state.

LFM
LFM (Learning From Mistakes)- Your unit papers are graded and we will be going over them in detail next science block. A number of students have asked me about retakes.
From now on, retaking a summative exam is not possible, however, we encourage you to fill out an LFM on every assessment.
By doing so, it will not increase the grade of the individual assignment, but will be noted (if done correctly) and may be reflected on your final semester grade.
You can find the LFM here.

SUBMARINE SUCCESS!
SUBMARINE SUCCESS!
Great work designing and building your submarines. It's been fun watching the process and to see everyone persevere through their failures - and even having a good time doing it.
I love epic fails.. they lead to great learning. Well done, well done, well done!

Reminders:
The final report is due next block. It is all on the rubric which we went over in class,
You can either do this either on paper on via video but either way the required information is the same -
- If you choose to draw diagrams, make sure you take a picture of the diagrams, a picture of your submarine and post it on your blog.
- In your blog post you need to have a full explanation of what is happening with your submarine in all three positions - positive, neutral, and negative. Your diagrams should be neat and clearly labeled. Your explanation should include ballast, density, mass, volume.
- If you choose to do a video, make sure you voiceover with all of the pertinent information. A detailed list of vocabulary to include can be found in the homework calendar.

Helping Hand of Science - Volume
Big difference between this helping hand video from last year and the one recently posted at the beginning of this year.. It is MUCH TOO LONG but is comprehensive in explaining volume of liquid and solid.
If you finish your lab work, begin making a helping hand video of your own. Perhaps something a fifth grader could understand.
Your video should be no longer than 3 minutes. WHAT???? Yep - no longer than 3 minutes and should include the following:

It will be challenging - There is alot of information to cover in a very short time.

- Explain the concept of volume - by definition
- Explain how to find volume of a liquid (include meniscus)
- Explain how to find volume of a regularly shaped object
- Explain how to find volume of an irregularly shaped object
- Explain the relationship between 1 cubic centimeter and 1ml

Welcome to Sixth Grade Science!
Welcome to Mrs. Hill's blog site - where indeed learning occurs in the oddest of places. We'll be using our blogs throughout the year for homework and to document our learning and share information. I find it to be a fantastic way to interact with each other and give each other feedback as we go along. It will also become the primary learning site for our class this year. I'm excited! Are you? Let's have an AWESOME year.

Elodea Lab
From the cell webquest and the onion and cheek cell labs you've learned a few fundamental differences between plant and animal cells. Both plant and animal cells have a cell membrane, but only the plant cell also has a cell wall. In the elodea lab you can clearly see the structure and function of each. The process you will see is called plasmolysis - you'll do some further reading on it in the lab. Plasmolysis in action!
Upload the video to your blog
Go to this link and click on the diffusion/osmosis basic principal. Read about diffusion and osmosis.
Then click on the plasmolysis animation. Watch the animation carefully. On your video blog post, explain what happened, using the following questions as a guide.
- What happens to the cells as the salt water flows under the cover slip?
- Why does this happen?
- Why didn’t the outer boundary of the cell collapse?
- Why do plants wilt when there is not enough water?

Solutions
We've discussed global water problems and shared startling water facts.
Now let's look at some of the things people and organizations are doing to help.
ICT
The water project,
Global Water Challenge,
The Other 90 Percent,
Water.org .
When you share your information on the wall, PLEASE TRY NOT TO OVERLAP ENTRIES ONTO EACH OTHER. You can move the wall around by dragging it and moving it right or down. That way we'll have plenty of room for everyone.

- Check out the following websites - and any others you find on your own.
- When you find a piece of information you'd like to share, put it on the padlet wall below, as I showed in class.
- (Just double click on the padlet wall and type your information. Be sure to include your name. You will need to save a picture to your desktop, then click on the middle icon of your padlet post and upload)
- Hopefully this will work! If not, then just comment on the post and share your information. There are so many wonderful organizations and inventions out there! Here are a few.....

What Wretched Beasties Live in Water?
Today in class you had the opportunity to see all the 'wretched beasties' in the digital microscopes. Yuk! Here are some of mine -- Imagine drinking THAT?
For homework tonight, upload the protist pictures and videos from class. Comment on the types of protists or other water life you found in your samples (click here to find information about the water microbes) and then visit the sites below to find three facts about our global water problems and waterborne infectious disease. Either add them to your blog or write them down and be ready to share in class.
Here are a few suggested sites - but you can research your own as well. You might find better sites! Please use more than one site.

Map of Infectious Disease
Click on the map to view infectious disease outbreaks around the world.
To find out more about a disease, follow your research guide (in your dropbox) and answer the key questions regarding microbes and disease prevention. We will be using it next class block. This is just a research guide, so you can use bullet points or notes to answer the questions. It doesn't have to be full sentences - but you do need to be thorough.
